Former Arsenal and Aston Villa star Paul Merson has identified Rasmus Hojlund, the striker for Manchester United, as a potential future superstar. Merson was particularly impressed by Hojlund’s crucial goal in United’s 2-1 Premier League victory against Aston Villa. In addition to Hojlund’s contribution, two goals from Alejandro Garnacho played a significant role in overturning a two-goal deficit for United in their previous league game against Villa late last year.

Expressing his admiration in his Sky Sports column, Merson commended Hojlund and recognized him as one of the emerging stars of the future based on his recent standout performances.

“I appreciate him. He’s a young talent at the age of 21, representing one of the largest clubs globally,” remarked Merson. “In football, if there’s one intangible quality you could encapsulate, it’s confidence. He possesses confidence now, and football hinges on that self-assurance. He adeptly holds and distributes the ball to the wingers.

“As you get more involved in the game, confidence surges. Opportunities keep presenting themselves, and you begin to convert them.”

In the initial 10 games, when he was in a goal drought, he seemed hurried in his attempts. But he has found his rhythm. “If that ball [for Hojlund’s opening goal] at Villa comes in at the start of the season, he would’ve hit it as hard as he could. But he places it under the goalkeeper,” observed Merson. “He’s a talented player, and I believe he will become a superstar.”

As Merson pointed out, Højlund faced challenges in the early part of the season in the Premier League. However, the Danish international is currently in a remarkable streak, having scored in five consecutive league matches.

Hojlund is not the only young talent at Manchester United that Merson has praised recently. In the previous week, the former Arsenal forward commented that Kobbie Mainoo’s exceptional goal against Wolves was something that Messi and Ronaldo might score.
