Chelsea
In the upcoming summer, Chelsea is set to focus on acquiring a specialist in set pieces, inspired by the influence of James Ward-Prowse at West Ham, according to Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea’s head coach Mauricio Pochettino has highlighted West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse as a target ahead of the summer transfer window. The Blues aim to acquire a set-piece specialist, with Pochettino emphasizing the impact of Ward-Prowse, known for his proficiency in free-kicks.
Pochettino expressed the need for improvement in set-pieces, acknowledging that Ben Chilwell is currently their closest option. After a 4-1 loss to Liverpool, Pochettino emphasized the importance of having quality set-piece takers and revealed plans to find a specialist for the next season.
He pointed to the success of teams like West Ham, attributing it to having players like Ward-Prowse. Chelsea has struggled with set-pieces, scoring only five of their 36 Premier League goals from such situations this season. Despite not signing a striker in the winter window, Pochettino believes he has sufficient options up front, including the return of Nicolas Jackson from the Africa Cup of Nations.
The existing Chelsea midfield includes Fernandez, Kante, Kovacic, Gallagher, Ruben-Loftus Cheek, and Mason Mount, with Mount operating in attacking midfield positions and the others serving as central midfield options. With Loftus-Cheek and Gallagher anticipated to be sold to address financial considerations by June 30th, Chelsea faces potential midfield exits.
As Kovacic approaches the final year of his contract in the summer, clubs like Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Manchester City have expressed interest. Although Kante is close to signing a contract extension, uncertainties persist about his continued tenure at Chelsea.
In light of potential midfield departures, Chelsea must reinforce the midfield to maintain balance for the upcoming season. With Mauricio Pochettino’s potential appointment, the acquisition of Southampton’s Ward-Prowse could be an ideal welcome gift for the Argentine.
Given Southampton’s relegation, Ward-Prowse might be available at a discounted price, valued at £33 million by Transfermarkt. Having previously collaborated at Southampton, Pochettino and Ward-Prowse share a history, with the Englishman earning praise as a role model during their time together.
Ward-Prowse’s proficiency in dead-ball situations makes him a low-risk signing, offering a reliable option for Chelsea’s midfield. While his arrival might not generate as much buzz as high-profile signings, he possesses the qualities and profile to contribute effectively in midfield.
