‘I Played 359 Games For Liverpool – Salah is the Most Selfish Player I’ve Ever Seen’

Mohamed Salah is widely regarded as one of the greatest Premier League players in history, with the Egyptian winger continuing to excel at 32. Arne Slot’s Liverpool has been performing impressively this season, and the former Roma and Fiorentina forward remains the team’s most potent attacking force.

He ranks as the eighth-highest scorer in Premier League history and could climb further up the list before his time at Anfield ends. Fans of the Merseyside club have a deep admiration for the player affectionately called the “Egyptian King,” with even club legends praising the dynamic winger.

Steven Gerrard, often considered the club’s greatest-ever player, has previously expressed high praise for Liverpool’s all-time top Premier League scorer (according to *The Daily Mail*): “I think he’s going to be one of these players that we’ll all appreciate even more when the day eventually comes when he moves on.”

Although Gerrard holds Salah in high regard, other former Liverpool players have not always been as complimentary. For instance, Graeme Souness had critical comments about Salah following his infamous touchline disagreement with Jurgen Klopp during last season’s match against West Ham United.

Klopp had initially chosen not to start Salah for the game at the London Stadium as Liverpool desperately tried to maintain their fading Premier League title hopes. When Klopp eventually brought Salah on late in the game, the pair were seen exchanging words on the touchline.

Souness, who made 359 appearances for Liverpool, shared his blunt assessment on William Hill’s *Three Up Front* podcast. The former midfielder claimed: “He no doubt has an exceptionally large opinion of himself, and he’ll have been angry at not starting the game against West Ham last week. I think the situation with Jurgen Klopp was a reaction to only being brought on with 10 minutes to go – it was more Salah than it was Klopp in that confrontation.”

Souness went further, describing Salah as the “most selfish” player he had ever seen in his lengthy career. He continued:

“Salah is the most selfish player I have ever witnessed. Even prior to that game, whenever Klopp takes him off, he is never happy about it. That is what you want from your players. If you take them off on two goals, they should want to stay on to score a third. When Sadio Mane was there, they’d fall out all the time.”

In his column for *The Times*, Souness reiterated this point, stating: “He is perhaps as greedy a player as I have seen. All the top names have an element of that, but he is extremely selfish.”

Souness also questioned Salah’s willingness to engage in physical battles during games, saying, “When the going gets tough and another player puts it on him, Salah will disappear from a game.”

He further explained: “Last season at Old Trafford, Lisandro Martínez went through him early on, and for the rest of the game Salah was looking over his shoulder for Martinez – he doesn’t like that side of the game. He’ll never get himself hurt.”

Souness, a tough and physical midfielder in his playing days, and Salah, a graceful and skillful winger, clearly differ in style and philosophy when it comes to football.

Since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017 for a relatively modest fee of £36.5 million, Salah has been the standout performer at Anfield year after year. He is widely considered Klopp’s greatest-ever signing, surpassing other key players like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.

Scoring goals consistently is one of football’s hardest skills, yet Salah has often made it look effortless. He broke the record for most goals in a Premier League season during his debut campaign and now aims to surpass Thierry Henry on the all-time scoring charts while edging closer to the top of the all-time assists rankings.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, Salah’s future remains uncertain. However, fans will be eager to see him continue scoring for Liverpool for as long as possible.
