Jurgen Klopp ‘wanted to replace Mo Salah with Premier League flop’ and it would’ve been Liverpool’s worst transfer
Mohamed Salah’s current contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, leading to significant speculation about his future. During previous contract negotiations, there were moments when reaching an agreement seemed uncertain. At that time, then-manager Jürgen Klopp considered Ajax winger Antony as a potential replacement for Salah. However, Liverpool’s ownership, led by Fenway Sports Group President Mike Gordon, ultimately decided that renewing Salah’s contract was the more prudent use of resources.
This decision has proven beneficial for Liverpool. Salah has been in exceptional form, scoring 10 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions this season, following a 25-goal campaign last year. His contributions have been instrumental in Liverpool’s strong performances in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
In contrast, Antony joined Manchester United from Ajax in the summer of 2022 for £82 million. Since then, he has scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 87 appearances across all competitions, a return considered modest given his transfer fee. This season, Antony has made just five appearances, with injuries affecting his availability.
Liverpool is keen to extend Salah’s stay at Anfield, with ongoing negotiations aimed at securing his future with the club.
