Manchester City Pep Guardiola have identified Real Madrid Mid-fielder as a potential replacement for Rodri this January after latest injury
Manchester City is reportedly gearing up to make a bold €70 million bid for Real Madrid’s dynamic midfielder Federico Valverde in the upcoming January transfer window. Sources, including Caught Offside, reveal that City is eyeing Valverde as a strategic reinforcement for their midfield, especially in light of recent injury setbacks.
Pep Guardiola’s squad has been hit hard by Rodri’s season-ending injury, which has left a noticeable gap in midfield stability and impacted City’s overall performance. Rodri, an essential component of Guardiola’s setup, has been challenging to replace, leading to inconsistency in recent matches. The Premier League champions, currently on an unexpected four-game losing streak across all competitions, have experienced a sharp dip in form, highlighted by a recent defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. This poor run has dropped City down the league standings, leaving them five points behind league leaders Liverpool.
In response to these challenges, Guardiola and City’s management are urgently exploring reinforcements. Valverde’s energy, versatility, and ability to contribute both offensively and defensively make him a prime target, as he would not only fill Rodri’s shoes but also offer greater tactical flexibility. However, other midfield options are also being considered. Among them is Turkish international Hakan Calhanoglu, valued at €45 million, who could bring creativity to City’s midfield, though his age might be a factor in City’s decision. Martin Zubimendi, seen as a rising star in Spanish football, and Samuele Ricci are also on the club’s radar for potential January moves.
Despite City’s intent and the proposed substantial offer, Real Madrid is reportedly firm in their decision to keep Valverde. The Uruguayan is seen as indispensable to Madrid’s ambitions, evidenced by his €1 billion release clause, which underscores his significance to the club. Madrid’s reluctance to negotiate stems not only from Valverde’s value but also from their own squad’s needs in La Liga and European competitions. With their sights set on retaining competitiveness, the club is unlikely to risk weakening their squad by letting go of a key player mid-season.
Ultimately, while Guardiola is keen on securing Valverde to bolster his squad, Real Madrid’s firm stance makes a transfer in January improbable. Nevertheless, City’s pursuit highlights the club’s urgent need to reinforce its midfield as they work to regain form and stay in contention for the title.
