Jamie Carragher has theory why Liverpool rejected Man Utd-bound Ruben Amorim that nobody has mentioned

Jamie Carragher recently speculated on why Liverpool, despite being linked to Ruben Amorim, opted to appoint Arne Slot as their manager over the Portuguese coach. According to Carragher, the decision may have been influenced by tactical preferences, as Amorim favors a back-three system, which might not align with Liverpool’s long-established structure. This approach contrasts with Slot, who uses a more traditional four-at-the-back formation, making him a better stylistic fit for Liverpool’s existing squad and academy setup, which mirrors Jurgen Klopp’s system. Slot’s approach would offer Liverpool an easier transition while retaining continuity within the club’s playing philosophy.

Carragher further pondered if United’s decision-makers, like Ashworth and Wilcox, considered Amorim’s tactical shift a potential issue, especially given the drastic difference from Erik ten Hag’s more varied style. However, he noted that United may have prioritized finding the right manager over immediate compatibility with the current squad, giving Amorim a “blank canvas” to introduce his own system.

Carragher also highlighted that one positive aspect of Amorim’s arrival is that his tactical approach will likely be more recognizable and structured than Ten Hag’s, whose style sometimes lacked clarity. This distinct playing identity could bring stability and direction as Manchester United looks to reestablish itself under Amorim’s leadership.
