Steven Gerrard’s tenure at Al-Ettifaq is under intense pressure following a shocking Saudi Cup elimination by a second-division team. The Liverpool legend’s team selection has drawn criticism, with questions raised about his tactics as he works to prove himself as the right manager to lead the club. Gerrard’s decision to continue his managerial career in the Middle East received mixed responses, and as he struggles to deliver positive results, skepticism around his appointment has only intensified.

Sixteen months into a £15.2 million-a-year contract, Gerrard has yet to achieve a standout season with Al-Ettifaq. While he guided the team to a respectable sixth-place finish in the Saudi Pro League last season, this campaign has been far less promising. Currently, Al-Ettifaq sits in tenth place, with relegation becoming a real concern. The team has not won a league match since September 14, a slump that has increased the pressure on Gerrard, particularly after the unexpected cup loss. Some voices are calling for a change in leadership, suggesting that fresh management may be needed to prevent a relegation battle.

Notably, Saudi journalist Mohammed Al-Sadaan expressed disappointment in Gerrard’s current situation, describing it as “sad” and suggesting that the Liverpool icon consider stepping down. Similarly, pundit Nasser Al-Jedaie questioned Gerrard’s leadership, asking about the direction of his project at Al-Ettifaq. “Gerrard served Al-Ettifaq off the field, but there are no results in terms of technical work. What exactly is the project Gerrard is leading?” Al-Jedaie’s remarks reflect the growing frustration among fans and analysts.

Gerrard’s recent tactical decisions have also been questioned, especially his lineup in their latest defeat, where he kept former Lyon striker Moussa Dembele on the bench. This decision left fans and analysts puzzled, as Dembele, an experienced forward with a strong track record, could have provided the offensive strength Al-Ettifaq needed. His absence from the starting lineup raised doubts about the cohesiveness of Gerrard’s strategy.

With the stakes rising, Gerrard faces the challenge of proving he can guide Al-Ettifaq effectively. His Saudi Arabian stint was anticipated as a fresh chapter in his managerial career, yet he now stands at a crucial point. With relegation concerns growing and criticisms of his leadership mounting, Gerrard’s next steps will be pivotal. To avoid further decline, he will need to not only adjust his tactics but also restore confidence among the fans, players, and club hierarchy.
