Erik ten Hag has been sacked as manager of Manchester United, the club have announced. United are in 14th place in the Premier League after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham and suffered their worst start to a season since 1989/90. Pressure on Ten Hag has grown in recent weeks following heavy home defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham. The club have also failed to win any of their three Europa League fixtures, drawing all three matches. United have now confirmed that Ten Hag has left his role as manager after two years in charge.

Erik ten Hag was photographed prior to Manchester United’s 2-1 loss against West Ham. Assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy will temporarily lead the first team while the club looks for a new manager.
During his tenure at Old Trafford, Ten Hag led the team to victory in both domestic cups, including a 2-1 win over Manchester City in last season’s FA Cup, which was pivotal in the club’s decision to retain him after a lackluster Premier League performance.
Despite considerable summer investment in the squad, the team’s performance has not improved significantly this season. The recent loss to West Ham, marked by a contentious late penalty against Matthijs de Ligt, was Ten Hag’s last match in charge. The club is now seeking his successor.
Van Nistelrooy is a potential candidate for the role but has privately expressed reservations about taking over due to his relationship with Ten Hag.
Thomas Tuchel has reportedly turned down the position over the summer and is set to become England’s manager on January 1. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino, who was also considered for the role after leaving Chelsea, has taken the managerial position with the U.S. men’s national team.
United’s next match is on Wednesday against Leicester in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
