Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has encouraged fans to recognize Darwin Nunez’s contributions this season, despite his diminished role under new manager Arne Slot. The 25-year-old forward, who joined Liverpool in 2022 for approximately £64 million, has seen his playing time reduced since Slot took charge, with Diogo Jota often preferred in the starting lineup.

Nunez has played nine times this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. However, his chances in the Premier League have been limited, with only one start—a 3-0 win over Bournemouth in September. Recently, against Chelsea, Nunez came on as a substitute for the injured Jota, winning five out of seven duels in the first half and making a notable impact, although he did not score.

In an interview with Tribal Football, Heskey commended Nunez’s work ethic and team contributions, describing him as “a fighter, determined, and a workhorse.” He acknowledged that while Nunez’s goal count isn’t high, his energy and ability to disrupt defenses are significant assets for Liverpool. He added, “We need to appreciate his goals, assists, and tenacity to open up defenses.”

Since Slot’s arrival, Jota has been the primary choice, netting four goals and providing two assists in ten games, which has pushed Nunez to a bench role. This situation has sparked speculation about Nunez’s future at the club. Despite arriving in the same summer as Erling Haaland, who has thrived at Manchester City, Nunez has struggled to match his output, tallying 35 goals in 105 appearances for Liverpool compared to Haaland’s outstanding record.

Nunez’s uncertain position could prompt the club to explore new attacking options in the summer transfer window. If his playing time continues to dwindle, he may need to rethink his future at Anfield. Although his contract extends until 2028, his long-term standing at the club may hinge on whether he can secure a more significant role in the coming months.

As it stands, Nunez’s future at Liverpool is unclear, and his performances in the remainder of the season will be vital in determining if he can reclaim a regular starting position or if he will seek more playing time elsewhere.
