Manchester City is looking to replace Pep Guardiola with a Liverpool legend in January.

It remains unclear whether Pep Guardiola will sign a contract extension with Manchester City or choose to leave the club this summer.

If he decides to exit, the club is reportedly eyeing Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso as a potential replacement.

At 42, Alonso has enjoyed a remarkable tenure with the Bundesliga side, finishing the 2023/24 domestic season unbeaten and nearly securing an unbeaten treble.

The Spaniard has already attracted interest from former teams like Liverpool and Real Madrid, and he has started the 2024/25 season well, with three wins, two draws, and one loss in the Bundesliga, along with two consecutive clean-sheet victories in the Champions League.

According to the *Daily Mail*, it wouldn’t be surprising if Manchester City also pursued Alonso, given his playing style, which closely resembles Guardiola’s approach and could resonate with the club’s management as they aim for consistency.

Meanwhile, City is navigating a difficult period due to ongoing charges against the club. If found guilty, this could deter players and managers from wanting to join the Etihad.

However, with the outcome still uncertain, City is likely to remain focused on achieving both on-field and off-field success.

Whether Guardiola chooses to extend his stay or hands over the reins to Alonso, it will take time to see if a new chapter in Manchester’s football story begins under the Spaniard’s guidance.
