Liverpool transfer news as Jordan Henderson set for remarkable January return

Jordan Henderson is being discussed for a surprising return to one of his former clubs, with Sunderland reportedly interested in signing the ex-Liverpool captain.

The England midfielder grew up in Sunderland and spent 13 years at the club, starting in their academy in 1998 before moving to Anfield in 2011.

Henderson faced criticism early in his career but proved his doubters wrong, becoming one of Liverpool’s standout midfielders. He took over the captaincy after Steven Gerrard’s departure in 2015, leading the team through its most successful period in years.

His leadership was apparent during his early days at Sunderland, and according to Football Insider, the Black Cats are working on an impressive deal to bring him back.

Sunderland is reportedly eager to secure Henderson during the January transfer window to enhance their Premier League promotion ambitions. The club currently leads the Championship with 19 points from nine matches, and Football Insider states that Ajax won’t hinder Henderson’s return if he expresses interest in coming back to the Stadium of Light.

It is suggested that Sunderland may offer Henderson a short-term contract through the season, with an option to extend for another year. Meanwhile, Liverpool is also linked with a move for former Manchester United left-back Alvaro Carreras.

The 21-year-old was part of United for four years, leaving in the summer for Benfica in a deal worth €6 million ($6.6 million).

AS reports that Liverpool is seeking a long-term replacement for Andrew Robertson, who turned 30 earlier this year, and Carreras is under consideration.

Currently under contract with Benfica until 2029, Liverpool would need to make a significant offer to convince the Portuguese club to part with the young player. Carreras’ prior experience in English football is seen as an asset for Liverpool, despite not having played for United’s first team; he made 42 appearances while on loan at Preston in the 2022-23 season.
