According to a report, Manchester United is looking to secure Ivan Toney as their next striker signing following Rasmus Hojlund and intends to acquire the banned Brentford player in January.

Following a ban by the FA for alleged betting offenses, Toney is prohibited from playing until January. Upon his return to action, Brentford is anticipating a resurgence of his talents, given his impressive record of scoring 20 Premier League goals for them last season.

Despite his absence in the first half of the season, Toney has drawn attention from larger clubs, as he seeks to capitalize on the prime years of his career. Surprisingly, interest from potential suitors persists for the 27-year-old.

As per a report from Football Transfers, Manchester United is preparing to make a bid for Toney in January. In fact, it is suggested that discussions with the striker took place even before their pre-season tour commenced earlier in the summer.

This might raise some confusion, especially considering Toney mentioned their rivals Liverpool as a club he would be interested in joining during an interview this week. However, the report affirms that Toney remains a target for Manchester United in January, allowing Hojlund to have a settling-in period until that time.

During the earlier part of this summer, Manchester United secured the services of the Denmark international from Atalanta as a strategic move for a long-term solution to lead their front line. Nevertheless, he is still in the process of refining his skills and may find advantages in developing alongside a more experienced striker.

Despite the club’s efforts, Manchester United has encountered challenges in locating a center-forward with the desired pedigree at a reasonable cost this summer. Additionally, creating the required space in their squad has proven to be a challenging task for them.

Manchester United adopts a patient approach in pursuit of Toney.

Presently, their strategy could involve waiting until January, aiming to secure a favorable deal for Toney. During this period, Hojlund will likely alternate with Marcus Rashford, who was United’s leading scorer last season, in the forward position.

When the moment arrives for them to pursue Toney, there is a possibility that they won’t be the sole interested party. However, they might be among those expressing interest in acquiring his services.

Manchester United Target Ivan Toney Suspended for 8 Months

Since joining Brentford from Peterborough United in 2020, Toney has accumulated an impressive record of 68 goals in 124 appearances.

In the mentioned interview, the former Newcastle player mentioned that he would be “foolish” to reject a move to a more competitive club if an offer were to materialize, although he considers his time with Brentford as one of the highlights of his career.

The statistics certainly support this claim, with his impressive performance even earning him an England debut earlier this year. Toney is set to resume training with Brentford next month, but his return to the field will be delayed for obvious reasons.

By the time the January transfer window arrives, Brentford will have Toney under contract for another 18 months, unless they can secure an extension. Perhaps an offer from a suitor like Manchester United could present them with a decision to ponder.
