Liverpool ‘eyeing incredible £140m transfer swoop’ that would stun the Premier League

Liverpool is reportedly considering a January move for two England internationals as they aim to enhance their chances of winning the Premier League title this season.

Under new head coach Arne Slot, Liverpool has had a strong start, currently topping the table with a one-point lead over reigning champions Manchester City and last season’s runners-up, Arsenal. They have also secured two wins in the restructured Champions League, including a 2-0 victory against Bologna on Wednesday.

Ryan Gravenberch’s standout performances early in the season have lessened the immediate need for Liverpool to find a new No. 6 in January, though Slot is still keen on strengthening this position after unsuccessfully trying to sign Martin Zubimendi over the summer.

Moreover, Slot’s squad is looking for defensive reinforcements, particularly a left-sided center-back. Reports indicate that Liverpool is contemplating moves for two central defenders in January: Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

According to GiveMeSport, Guehi is considered a significant target, while Branthwaite is preferred overall. Each player might demand a fee of around £70 million, although Liverpool could explore more budget-friendly options given the current struggles at both Everton and Palace.

Branthwaite is under contract with Everton until 2027, whereas Guehi’s contract with Palace extends until 2026, potentially making Guehi more attainable. The historic rivalry between Everton and Liverpool could complicate negotiations for Branthwaite.

It appears unlikely that Liverpool will acquire both players due to financial limitations and existing depth in central defense, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah, and Joe Gomez already part of the squad.
