After talking with him, I found put that he was never a good coach, so I couldn’t afford to waste any more time under his terrible management. I have to leave the club, and now I am one of the best Midfielder in Premier League”-Former Man United player reveals he had to leave the club after just one conversation with Erik ten Hag when he took over.

Former Manchester United player James Garner has shared his thoughts on leaving the club, noting that it took just one conversation with manager Erik ten Hag to reach his decision.
Ten Hag took over United in May 2022, following interim manager Ralf Rangnick. Since then, several prominent players have left, including Cristiano Ronaldo after his controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
Garner, who transferred to Everton in September 2022 for around £15 million, discussed his exit with *BBC Sport* in 2023. He stated that a candid conversation with Ten Hag was crucial in deciding to pursue other opportunities.
“Ten Hag is very approachable but also very strict. He doesn’t tolerate anyone breaking the rules. He’s straightforward and holds people accountable if they do something wrong,” Garner explained.
“My conversation with him was straightforward. I asked him directly if I would be part of the squad or if he saw a role for me. I didn’t get the response I was hoping for, so I decided to leave.”
Having just enjoyed an impressive season, Garner wanted to continue playing regularly rather than risk being on the bench. “I had a great season before that, probably the best I could have had, and I didn’t want to stagnate by sitting on the bench every week. Nothing is guaranteed in football, but when the club starts signing three or four midfielders, you start to understand where you stand.”
During his time at United, Garner made only seven appearances and spent significant time on loan at Watford and Nottingham Forest, where he gained more playing time. Since joining Everton, the 23-year-old has established himself as a regular, making 63 appearances and contributing two goals and three assists from his defensive midfield position.
