Erik ten Hag’s substitution choices faced criticism once more after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with FC Twente in the Europa League.

It was a disappointing night for Ten Hag and his team. United initially led with a strong goal from Christian Eriksen, and Marcus Rashford was lively in the first half, while Joshua Zirkzee also made a positive impact in attack.

However, after a sluggish start to the second half, FC Twente equalized in the 68th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by Eriksen, with Sam Lammers scoring.

Before the equalizer, Amad Diallo was replaced by Alejandro Garnacho. Then, with 10 minutes left, Ten Hag made three contentious substitutions, taking off Zirkzee, Rashford, and Eriksen for Rasmus Højlund and Mason Mount, leading fans to question his choices.

Since arriving at United in the summer of 2022, Ten Hag’s substitutions have frequently drawn criticism, and Wednesday night was no exception.

One fan commented: “Rashford, Eriksen, Zirkzee – three of the best players on the pitch getting subbed off? I understand Eriksen made a mistake, and the left side struggled defensively, but MAN… I love Bruno, but he is having a stinker. Bruno and Eriksen OFF – Mount, Højlund on for me.”

Another remarked: “Ten Hag takes too long to make subs, and it’s costing us games,” while another stated: “Ten Hag and his poorly timed subs. Eriksen should’ve been subbed at the 60th minute. We paid for it today.”

A fourth fan expressed: “The second half was terrible. The defending for their equalizer was awful, along with poor substitutions and game management from Ten Hag. Fernandes was having a shocker.”

A fifth supporter noted: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a manager get subs wrong as often as Ten Hag,” while a sixth added: “Ten Hag always makes the substitutions that should have been made at the 60-minute mark around the 78-80 minute mark, and we almost always concede in between. He just never learns. Idiotic in-game management.”
