First Carabao Cup fixture involving Premier League club called off after flooding leaves stadium with ‘sinkhole’ in the pitch

Flood alerts are currently in effect across England this week, impacting at least one match due to the weather conditions.
Newcastle’s Carabao Cup game against AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday has been postponed because of significant flooding.
The beginning of the week is anticipated to bring severe weather, with the Met Office issuing multiple important flood warnings for several areas, especially in southern England, including Wimbledon.
AFC Wimbledon has returned to Plough Lane, the club’s original home ground prior to its move to Milton Keynes, which led to a shift in identity.
Following considerable overnight flooding on the field, both teams have confirmed the match’s postponement. It was set for Tuesday at 7:45 PM but will need to be rescheduled.
AFC Wimbledon released a statement expressing regret: “We inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding from the River Wandle and nearby areas, including our Cherry Red Records Stadium, the Carabao Cup fixture against Newcastle United on Tuesday night has been postponed.”
Furthermore, six other third-round Carabao Cup matches are scheduled for this week, mainly featuring Premier League teams also involved in European competitions. Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool will all be playing at home. Aston Villa is scheduled to visit League One’s Wycombe, while Leicester will face Walsall in League Two.
