Liverpool’s chances of signing Anthony Gordon have diminished as reports indicate he is nearing an agreement on a new contract with Newcastle. Arne Slot’s start as Liverpool’s new manager was promising, highlighted by three straight victories, including a 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. However, the team’s momentum was interrupted by a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield, despite dominating play.

In that match, Liverpool generated numerous scoring opportunities but lacked their typical composure in front of goal, failing to make the most of their chances. Although the team has been solid overall, they have struggled to consistently threaten from the left flank. Players like Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have displayed moments of quality but have not provided the consistent output of Mohamed Salah on the right.

Liverpool has been interested in acquiring a new left winger, particularly targeting Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. The club reportedly attempted multiple times to sign the 23-year-old during the summer but did not succeed. Now, securing Gordon’s transfer appears even more difficult, as he is expected to receive a new contract that would make him the highest-paid player at St. James’ Park, earning approximately £9 million annually.

Given this situation, Liverpool’s interest in Gordon may wane, especially after they secured Federico Chiesa for a relatively low fee during the summer transfer window. The decision on whether Liverpool will continue to pursue Gordon may hinge on his performances in the upcoming matches.
