In 2022, Wayne Rooney advised Manchester United to center their team around four players, but only one of those players is still with the club.

At that time, Manchester United were facing difficulties under interim manager Ralf Rangnick following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

During a Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football segment, Rooney suggested that Manchester United should focus on four players.

He mentioned: “I believe [Jadon] Sancho will improve next year, and Marcus [Rashford] will also get better. They have promising young players. Jesse Lingard should be playing because he brings energy and quality. Scott McTominay has performed well.”

Rooney further commented: “They do have some promising young talents; they just need to gain confidence and believe in their abilities to perform at their best. And of course, the new manager will likely bring in his own players and shape the team.”

Two years after Rooney’s remarks, only Marcus Rashford is still at Old Trafford. Rashford had a tough 2023/24 season and is struggling this campaign. Meanwhile, Scott McTominay moved to Serie A club Napoli during the summer transfer window.
