Arsenal might have missed a prime opportunity to sign Viktor Gyökereş, a rising star in European football. The club passed on pursuing Gyökereş during the summer transfer window due to his hefty £86 million release clause. Instead, Arsenal brought in Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea.

Gyökereş, who plays for Sporting CP, has had an explosive start to the 2024/25 season, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in just five league games. He also impressed in the UEFA Nations League, netting three goals and adding two assists for Sweden, bringing his total to ten goals and five assists in seven games this season. This follows a remarkable previous season where he scored 43 goals and provided 15 assists in 50 appearances.

Arsenal’s decision to pass on Gyökereş might be increasingly scrutinized as the season progresses. However, there could still be a chance to sign him next summer, particularly if the competition for his signature becomes less intense. With top European clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City already stocked with elite strikers, Arsenal may find it easier to secure Gyökereş if they decide to act on his release clause next year.
