Real Madrid Legend Luka Modric Reflects on Retirement Plans as He Turns 39

As Luka Modric celebrated his 39th birthday, he once again faced questions about his potential retirement, a topic that has gained increasing prominence as his illustrious career progresses. Having been a vital figure for both Real Madrid and Croatia, Modric remains a crucial player, but the reality of time inevitably looms.
Following his 180th appearance for Croatia, where he scored the match-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Poland in the UEFA Nations League, Modric spoke openly about his future. “With me, you never know,” he remarked when asked about his retirement plans. “We have to take it game by game. I can’t think about the future. When I no longer feel the fire in me, I will retire.” Modric stressed that the decision would come from within, as only he can determine when he no longer has the drive to continue.
This milestone appearance for Croatia further solidified Modric’s extraordinary career, marking his longevity and influence on the international stage. Reflecting on reaching 180 caps, he expressed pride, stating, “I’m proud and happy to have reached 180 games with the national team. I never dreamed of reaching this point.”
Despite his advancing years, Modric remains loyal to Real Madrid, having turned down highly lucrative offers, including those from Saudi Arabia in recent summers. His decision to renew his contract for another 12 months after securing his sixth Champions League title demonstrated his ongoing commitment to the club. However, Real Madrid legend Predrag Mijatovic hinted that this season might be Modric’s last in the famous white jersey.
Mijatovic revealed that Modric understands his current role, no longer being a guaranteed starter under Carlo Ancelotti, but still contributing significantly. While Modric has fended off big-money offers, Mijatovic suggested that Modric might soon consider retirement, possibly after this season with Real Madrid.
Whenever Modric chooses to retire, his legacy as one of football’s greatest playmakers is already assured. From winning numerous titles at Real Madrid to leading Croatia to a World Cup final, Modric has left an indelible mark on the game. As the football world awaits his decision, Luka Modric continues to perform at a high level, chasing more glory with the same passion that has fueled his career for nearly two decades.
