Mason Mount was substituted at halftime during Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton due to an injury he reported. Joao Pedro’s goal in the 95th minute secured the win for Brighton, and Mount’s injury added to the team’s woes.
Mount, who transferred from Chelsea for £55 million last season, has struggled with injuries, limiting him to just 20 appearances in all competitions. Although he started this season fully fit, Mount was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee at halftime after expressing discomfort. United manager Erik ten Hag explained that Mount’s substitution was precautionary, stating, “It was forced. He reported a problem, and I didn’t want to take a risk. I don’t know yet how serious it is.”
The substitution allowed Zirkzee, who had scored the winner in the season opener against Fulham, to come on and score the equalizer. Despite United’s efforts, Brighton’s first-half goal from Kaoru Mitoma proved decisive.
Ten Hag expressed confidence in his squad, noting, “Our bench is strong. Zirkzee made a difference, and we’ll have to see how bad Mount’s injury is. He might miss the game against Liverpool next Sunday.”
