In their recent match at Wembley, Manchester United faced off against Manchester City, with a focus on Alejandro Garnacho, who returned to the bench for the first time since October. Erik ten Hag had previously listed Garnacho as a substitute in the FA Cup final against City 11 weeks earlier, and once again, the young forward made a significant impact. Despite starting on the right wing, considered his weaker side, Garnacho showcased his potential with an impressive individual effort, capitalizing on his previous success in exploiting City’s mistakes.

The match was typical of United’s penchant for late goals, with Bernardo Silva equalizing for City in the 89th minute after catching Facundo Pellistri off guard. The game proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Garnacho successfully converted his penalty.

Compared to their last Wembley derby, United had a smaller squad, with new signing Joshua Zirkzee left unused on the bench. Key players like Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford, who had performed well during the American tour, struggled to make an impact in this match. Mount played as a No. 10, while Bruno Fernandes took on the false nine role, reminding Ten Hag of his crucial playmaking abilities. Rashford, however, missed two notable chances, including one from a Garnacho cross.

Amad Diallo initially struggled to find his rhythm but eventually made a difference with some clever play, including a one-two with Casemiro. Despite this, Amad’s unselfishness led to a missed opportunity when he chose to pass instead of taking a shot.

Casemiro, who had been a strong attacking presence for United despite his defensive role, created several chances for his teammates, including Rashford and Amad. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Harry Amass, despite expectations of starting, ended up watching from the stands.

The match concluded on a disappointing note for United, especially with injuries depleting their defense, leaving them without a single defender on the bench. Facundo Pellistri, who had only recently returned to Carrington after a loan spell at Granada, was unexpectedly called into action as a right-back, where he struggled against Bernardo Silva.

Overall, the game highlighted Garnacho’s rising importance to the team, while other players, like Rashford and Amad, found it difficult to seize their opportunities.
