New Republic of Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has urged Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher to leave Anfield this summer in pursuit of regular football.

The Icelandic coach, appointed as the new Irish boss last week, is already making headlines with his comments about one of his top players.

When asked if Kelleher should leave Liverpool, Hallgrímsson told the Irish Mirror: “Of course, especially since he has shown he can play at the highest level. It would be a shame if he’s not playing regularly after proving his ability.”

Last season was Kelleher’s best at Liverpool, with the 25-year-old making 26 appearances in all competitions, including 14 consecutive games while Alisson was injured.

The Irishman demonstrated his skills on numerous occasions, suggesting it’s the right time for him to start a new chapter in his career.

Kelleher has expressed his desire to be a first-choice goalkeeper, saying, “I feel like I’ve done my years as a number two. The ambition now is to be a number one. I am ready and capable,” according to the Irish Mirror.

Having spent his entire career at Liverpool, Kelleher has remained due to Jurgen Klopp’s support. With Klopp now gone, Kelleher has another reason to leave the Reds. It remains to be seen which clubs will pursue the Ireland international, but if a good offer comes, Kelleher is likely to accept it.
