Jose Mourinho asserted that the sale of key players at Manchester United, whom he deemed indispensable to the team’s success, was a contributing factor to his own struggles and the team’s performance decline. He criticized the decision to part ways with these influential players while retaining others he considered less beneficial, implying that it weakened the squad.

Mourinho stressed that he would have opted to retain three Manchester United players who were let go under Louis van Gaal’s management. Upon assuming the managerial role from Van Gaal in 2016, Mourinho openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the condition of the club he inherited, describing it as ‘sad.’
He expressed regret over the exits of Angel Di Maria, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, and Danny Welbeck, indicating that had he been in charge, they would have stayed at Old Trafford under his leadership.
Mourinho made his stance clear, asserting, “I would never have sold [Angel] Di Maria, Chicharito, Danny Welbeck – never, no chance.” Despite Angel Di Maria’s hefty £59.7 million transfer from Real Madrid, his time at United was brief, marked by struggles to meet expectations before eventually moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, following a loan spell at Real Madrid, departed for Bayer Leverkusen after scoring 59 goals for the Red Devils during his tenure.
As for Danny Welbeck, a product of United’s esteemed youth academy, he made a Premier League switch to Arsenal.
Mourinho’s disappointment with these departures reflects his belief in their value to the team. However, during his tenure, he oversaw significant transfers, including the acquisitions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Eric Bailly.
