“This is the reason why I took Kobbie Miami and Ramus Hojlund off the game against Burnley” Erik Ten Hag finally adresss the fans on why he made the substitution

Erik ten Hag has justified his choice to substitute Rasmus Hojlund and Kobbie Mainoo during Manchester United’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday.
The duo were replaced while the game was still tied at nil-nil in the 65th minute, with Amad Diallo and Scott McTominay entering the field in their stead, a decision that was met with disapproval from the Old Trafford crowd.
Initially, it seemed that Ten Hag’s substitution had paid dividends when Antony put United in the lead in the 79th minute. However, Zeki Amdouni equalized from the penalty spot shortly after.
Despite the frustration of dropping two vital points, Ten Hag has defended his alterations and insists he was looking out for Mainoo and Hojlund after a demanding few weeks.
When questioned about the frustrated reactions from supporters towards his substitutions and at the full-time whistle, Ten Hag responded, “No disrespect, but my priority is managing the team. Winning matches takes precedence, and I assess what the game demands. At that point, we needed some fresh legs and tactical adjustments.”
He continued, “Bringing on a player who can maintain possession, offer creativity, and adapt to the high-intensity nature of the midfield was essential. The game was dynamic, with frequent changes in momentum.”
“And then you notice some fatigue in Rasmus, a very young player, and Kobbie Mainoo as well, also a young player.
“So, they were substituted, and it was the correct decision. Subsequently, we saw the benefit of it by introducing fresh legs with Scott in that position.
“When the game is open like that, he excels, making penetrating runs. It just so happened that we found ourselves in a winning position from that move.”
“And finally, we’ve had three games within the span of seven days, while Burnley had some rest days. In such a high-intensity match, it’s entirely logical to substitute players who are very young and experiencing their first years in the Premier League.
“Not to mention the risk of injury. Rasmus Hojlund has already dealt with numerous injuries this season, and Kobbie Mainoo as well, having suffered two significant ones. I’m keen on preventing further injuries, so I took measures to protect them.
“So, there are multiple reasons behind the substitutions. However, I understand that fans want to see these players in action. They recognize the skills they bring and their contributions to the team, and I respect that. But ultimately, I have to fulfill my responsibilities, and that’s the right decision.”
