Manchester United terminated Mason Greenwood’s contract this week, offering him the opportunity to revive his international career with Jamaica. The 21-year-old’s international affiliations have been relatively undisclosed, but he still has the option to switch allegiance from England to Jamaica. This development follows Manchester United’s decision to part ways with Greenwood, shedding light on his club future more than 18 months after facing charges of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault.

In February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service indicated reduced chances of conviction due to key witnesses retracting their statements and the emergence of new evidence. Despite not being found guilty, Greenwood’s statement this week incorrectly claimed his exoneration.

Following a six-month internal review, Manchester United chose to assist Greenwood in continuing his career elsewhere.

While potential suitors lean towards a loan deal, there’s also interest in a permanent transfer for Mason Greenwood. Roma emerges as a potential destination, with Jose Mourinho, Greenwood’s former manager, possibly providing an opportunity. Other interested clubs include Atalanta, Inter, Monaco, as well as teams in Germany, Turkey, Spain, and the Saudi Pro League.

Greenwood, who has amassed 135 first-team club appearances before his career disruption, had limited involvement with the England senior team. His England debut in September 2020 was overshadowed by a breach of Covid-19 quarantine rules, resulting in his removal from the squad. Despite indications that England manager Gareth Southgate was willing to give Greenwood a second chance, his arrest and subsequent charges halted any potential return.

Although Southgate aimed to reintegrate Greenwood for the 2022 World Cup, his arrest put an end to those efforts. Since January 22, 2022, Greenwood has not played in a professional match or trained with a club during Manchester United’s suspension.
