Oliver got it wrong’ – Ex-PGMOL chief bemoans one ‘poor decision’ in chaotic Merseyside derby…
Oliver made a mistake’ – Former PGMOL chief criticizes one ‘poor decision’ in the tumultuous Liverpool vs Manchester Utd Match.
The former FIFA referee stated: “Liverpool suffered from a poor decision by Michael Oliver for not awarding a penalty for a clear handball in the penalty area. Oliver made an error.”
Oliver made several perplexing calls at Anfield.
This incident occurred just 18 minutes into the match and was the second of many mistakes by Oliver at Anfield.
Premier League clarifies why Man Utd goal was permitted against Liverpool.
Liverpool fell behind early in their Premier League match against Manchester United at Anfield, despite protests regarding the goal to referee Michael Oliver.
The Premier League Match Centre has clarified why Bryan Mbeumo’s goal was allowed to stand in Liverpool’s match against Manchester United.
The Reds fell behind early at Anfield as Mbeumo scored past Giorgi Mamardashvili, but the goal was controversial after Alexis Mac Allister sustained an injury.
The Argentine midfielder was struck by teammate Virgil van Dijk and seemed to have a head injury. However, instead of halting play, as is customary in the Premier League, referee Michael Oliver allowed the game to continue.
Mbeumo took advantage to score the opening goal, and on Sky Sports, commentator Peter Drury remarked that the goal was permitted because Oliver did not notice Mac Allister on the ground.
Jamie Carragher provided a sarcastic comment from the Sky commentary booth, saying: “He was on the floor holding his head!”
Virgil van Dijk and Arne Slot both protested to the referee, and Carragher shared his thoughts on the ruling, which typically stops play for players to receive treatment.
He added: “I have been frustrated in the past that players have exploited that rule. There was an incident in the Arsenal game yesterday near the dugout, and the referee stopped play.
“I am quite surprised Michael Oliver did not stop play.”
However, colleague Gary Neville criticized the Liverpool captain for his involvement in the goal, as he lost track of Mbeumo, who then scored.
Neville remarked: “Mac Allister goes down, but what surprises me is Van Dijk. Mbeumo runs past him, and he fails to notice. That is the major shock.
“Mbeumo reacts like a boxer getting up and he is off. Mamardashvili is unable to stop it, marking a remarkable start for Manchester United.”
Liverpool believed they should have been awarded a penalty shortly after for a suspected handball by Amad Diallo, but Oliver did not signal for a penalty.
A message from the Premier League Match Centre on social media stated: “The referee’s decision of no penalty was reviewed and upheld by VAR, as it was determined that Amad’s arm was in a natural and justifiable position.
Liverpool entered the match following a streak of three consecutive losses in both the Premier League and Champions League.
With Arsenal securing a victory at Fulham on Saturday night, the Reds could find themselves four points behind at the top of the table by the end of the weekend.
