EXCLUSIVE: Dion Dublin cautions Liverpool that Manchester United are “due” for a significant victory ahead of their clash at Anfield.

The former England striker believes his old team can surprise the Premier League champions in the fierce Northwest derby – yet he still supports the Anfield side in their quest to keep the title.

Dion Dublin has alerted Liverpool that his Manchester United team is “due” for a major win that could alter their season before the two rivals meet at Anfield this Sunday.

“Liverpool, be cautious – it’s going to be a tight match,” remarked the BBC analyst. However, the ex-England striker continues to endorse Arnie Slot’s squad to secure their Premier League title in a competitive race this season.

Liverpool enters the Northwest derby following a streak of three straight losses before the international break.

Despite co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s public endorsement of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United sits in 10th place without an away victory this season, as the Portuguese coach nears his first anniversary in the role next month.

Since the 7-0 defeat at Anfield under Erik ten Hag in March 2023, the Old Trafford team has drawn their last two away matches against Liverpool.

Former Manchester United player Dublin stated: “This is one of two or three matches in the season that can go either way. We know Liverpool has outperformed Manchester United for many years.

But this is a rivalry, it’s tribalism – it could swing either direction. As a former Man United player, I hope they win the match.

“They are overdue for a very effective, winning performance. Liverpool, be wary – it’s going to be a close contest.

Liverpool has lost their last three matches – this is when they can be most dangerous because they may not be at their best, but they possess so many incredible, world-class players.

If they find their rhythm, no one can compete with them. I hope they don’t find that rhythm. But if they do, it’s going to be an exciting match.”

Manchester United finished 15th last season and have already faced a humiliating loss to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup this season.

“Manchester United must secure a top-four finish – that’s a given,” Dublin remarked. “This is a conservative expectation for Manchester United Football Club. They ought to be contending for the Premier League title and qualifying for the Champions League every year. Given their current position, achieving European football would be considered a successful season.

“Should Manchester United triumph on Sunday, it will significantly boost their mental state. I believe this will foster greater unity within the squad.

For Manchester United, defeating Liverpool should serve as a crucial milestone: ‘We have triumphed over one of the best teams globally, not just in the Premier League. This is the moment we need to elevate our performance.’

The title race remains competitive, with Liverpool, who began their Premier League title defense with five straight victories, being surpassed at the top by Arsenal before the break.

Both teams were the largest spenders during the summer transfer window, yet Dublin does not perceive it as merely a two-team contest.

“It’s a challenging situation to predict,” the Homes Under The Hammer host continued.

“It’s difficult to overlook Liverpool, while Arsenal has been exceptional once more. Will they finally cross the finish line this time after coming so close? Manchester City is likely feeling a bit frustrated as they have been sidelined.

They are eager for trophies. Chelsea is also in the mix. There are numerous contenders. If Liverpool begins to find their rhythm, they could become difficult to overtake.”
