Arsenal Issue Statement as Ex-Player Placed in Coma After Horrific Incident

An Arsenal academy graduate is in an induced coma after suffering a brain injury during a match.

Billy Vigar represented the North London club’s Under-21 side until July 2024, when he joined Hastings United.

He subsequently joined Chichester City on a free transfer last month, having also previously had spells with Derby County and Eastbourne Borough.

However, Vigar is currently in a bad way after reportedly hitting a concrete wall during Chichester City’s Isthmian League Premier Division clash with Wingate and Finchley last weekend.

His club did not reveal the details of how the 21-year-old from Worthing suffered the injury in a statement released after the match.

“Billy received a significant brain injury and is currently in an induced coma in intensive care, receiving the best possible treatment,” read the statement.

“It is too early to say what the outcome will be, and even if things go well, there will be a long road to recovery.”

Chichester City are currently eighth in the Isthmian League Premier Division, having drawn 0-0 with Wingate and Finchley on the weekend.

Vigar scored two goals in 32 appearances for Eastbourne Borough during the 2023/2024 campaign.

Now Arsenal have released a statement wishing their former player a speedy recovery.

“Everyone at Arsenal sends love and support to Billy and his loved ones at this difficult time,” said their statement.

Other non-league sides have shown their support, including Brentwood Town FC

“Our thoughts are with Billy and his family at this difficult and sensitive time,” they said.

“We’re all wishing him strength and a full recovery.”

Arsenal were in action in the Premier League on Sunday but had to settle for a draw against Manchester City.

Erling Haaland gave Pep Guardiola’s side the lead in the first half, and they appeared to be heading towards a hard-fought three points after a defiant defensive display.

However, in the closing stages of the match, Brazilian international Gabriel Martinelli chipped Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to rescue a point for the Gunners.

The point left Mikel Arteta’s team in second place, five points behind league leaders Liverpool after five matches.
