Liverpool Edge Everton 2-1 in First Merseyside Derby as Cody Gakpo Faces Heavy Criticism
Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Everton at Anfield, but the win was overshadowed by growing criticism of forward Cody Gakpo.
Arne Slot’s side came into the clash riding high after a statement Champions League win over Atlético Madrid, and they wasted little time asserting control in the derby. Mohamed Salah’s clever through-ball in the 10th minute set up Ryan Gravenberch, who finished clinically to put Liverpool ahead.
Before the break, Hugo Ekitike doubled the lead, slipping the ball between Jordan Pickford’s legs to send the Anfield faithful into raptures and put the Reds firmly in control.
Everton refused to roll over and got back into the game after the hour mark through Idrissa Gueye, setting up a tense finale. But Liverpool’s defense held firm, securing three points and keeping Slot’s men at the top of the table for at least another week.
Gakpo’s Struggles Under the Microscope
Not every Liverpool player impressed, however. Cody Gakpo endured a frustrating afternoon, failing to register a single shot on target, losing possession 11 times, and being dribbled past twice before conceding a foul.
His underwhelming display prompted Slot to replace him on the hour mark with Florian Wirtz — a substitution that may spark bigger questions about Gakpo’s role in the squad. With Wirtz and record signing Alexander Isak both pushing for more game time, the Dutch forward’s place in the starting XI is no longer guaranteed.
Fan Backlash Intensifies
Liverpool fans were quick to voice their frustration on social media, with many calling for Slot to drop Gakpo from the lineup altogether:
- “Slot needs to deal with the elephant in the room at some point (Gakpo).”
- “Gakpo is upsetting to watch this season, what happened?”
- “Alexis and Gakpo have been absolutely woeful today.”
- “Gakpo already ruined about 3 attacks.”
- “Gakpo is so predictable, change it up a little brother. Everyone knows your move.”
The message from supporters is clear: patience is wearing thin. With crucial fixtures coming up, Slot may soon have a major decision to make regarding Gakpo’s future in his starting XI.
Liverpool may have won the battle, but Slot now faces a new dilemma — balancing results with underperforming stars as the Reds look to mount a serious title challenge.
