Jamie Carragher Confident Liverpool Will Sign Alexander Isak but Issues Warning Over Title Hopes

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed confidence that the club will secure the signing of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak this summer. However, the former defender cautioned Reds fans not to expect the acquisition to guarantee a runaway Premier League title.
Isak, who impressed in the Bundesliga before joining Newcastle, is reportedly pushing for a move to Anfield after an initial £110 million ($148 million) offer was turned down. Despite Liverpool’s busy summer spending spree—bringing in exciting talents like Florian Wirtz, Emmanuel Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike—Carragher believes that simply adding a high-profile striker will not automatically make Liverpool title favorites.
A Big Signing, But Not a Magic Fix
Alexander Isak’s talent is undeniable. The 24-year-old forward scored 21 goals last season for Newcastle, showcasing his pace, skill, and clinical finishing. Liverpool see him as a key addition to bolster their attack after some struggles in front of goal last season. Yet, Carragher’s message is clear: signing Isak is just part of the puzzle.
Speaking to The Independent, Carragher said:
“Yeah, I think so, but I don’t get this narrative of Liverpool are going to run away with it. If you look at history, it could tell you that it’s not just about having the best players, it’s about having the best team, and sort of making that balance right, and at the weekend it didn’t quite look right.”
The former Reds defender is referring to Liverpool’s recent Community Shield defeat against Crystal Palace, which highlighted some of the team’s issues in defense and midfield balance.
Team Chemistry Over Star Power
Carragher underlined that football success is about more than just assembling star players; it’s about creating a cohesive unit that plays well together. He said:
“I think we will have a title race, and I think there’s a lot of talk. I think the great thing about football is what we actually saw on Sunday with Liverpool. It didn’t look right. It tells me it’s not just about spending lots of money and buying the best players, you’ve still got to manage that team and make it work and have a nice balance to it.”
This insight touches on a challenge Liverpool face under new manager Arne Slot: integrating new signings quickly and finding the right mix on and off the pitch. Liverpool’s spending has been aggressive this summer, but as Carragher suggests, money alone won’t solve all problems.
What’s Next for Liverpool and Isak?
Liverpool fans eagerly await an improved bid for Isak, as the club aims to finalize the transfer in the coming weeks. Isak’s signing would strengthen their frontline options ahead of a tough Premier League season, where Liverpool will defend their title against hungry rivals.
The Reds will start their league campaign on Friday night at Anfield against Bournemouth, a game that will offer a first glimpse at the team’s readiness and balance after a turbulent preseason.
Jamie Carragher’s take is a grounded reminder that football is a team sport at its core. While Alexander Isak’s arrival would be a significant boost, Liverpool’s Premier League success will depend on how well the squad gels together and how effectively the manager blends the talent.
