The conditions are primed for Liverpool to return for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi after they wrap up a move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Today, Newcastle journalist Lee Ryder broke the exciting news that Liverpool have now received “every encouragement to put in another bid for Alexander Isak.”

Of course, that bid must still meet the Tyneside club’s demands but Isak has already given the greenlight to a move but once that happens (assuming it does), Liverpool must immediately return their attention to recruiting Marc Guehi.

Not only is the Englishman the perfect profile for a long term centre-back at Anfield, but there is a dire need for increased depth in that department for Liverpool.

At present, Liverpool’s only senior central defenders are Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez while Arne Slot has experimented with both Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch in that department. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Andy Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas played at centre-back in earlier round cup games next season.

Gomez is injured again and when he returns, will struggle to inspire confidence that he can remain fit. It’s quite tragic how his injuries have derailed his season in much the same way Daniel Sturridge was denied what should have been an illustrious career.

Signing Guehi or a similarly accomplished centre-back is non-negotiable this summer with Liverpool yet to replace Jarell Quansah after his move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool were in pole position to sign Marc Guehi last month with conditions primed for a move to Anfield once Isak deal is complete

According to the Mirror, Liverpool were in pole position to sign Guehi last summer before the Reds pivoted and rapidly accelerated their interest in Alexander Isak which saw them submit a £110m bid to Newcastle which was rejected.

Guehi reportedly “favours a move to Liverpool” and with the Isak deal set to progress with Newcastle encouraging them to submit a second bid for the Swede, the attention is likely set to swing back to Guehi.

After rejecting £70m bids from Newcastle for their captain last summer – a decision vindicated by an historic FA Cup triumph – Crystal Palace are now demanding £40m for Guehi.

Guehi is a very good player – Gary Lineker called him “intelligent during EUROs 2024 – and he’s 25 like Isak. The perfect age for an ambitious club like Liverpool looking for a star on the verge of becoming top class.
