Liverpool was initially set to acquire £40m Marc Guehi before shifting focus to Alexander Isak.

The stage is set for Liverpool to revisit their pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi after finalizing a deal for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Today, Newcastle journalist Lee Ryder shared the thrilling update that Liverpool has received “all the encouragement needed to make another offer for Alexander Isak.”

Naturally, this offer must still align with the demands of the Tyneside club, but Isak has already signaled his approval for a transfer.

Once that occurs (assuming it does), Liverpool must promptly redirect their efforts towards securing Marc Guehi.

The Englishman not only fits the profile of a long-term center-back at Anfield, but there is also an urgent need for greater depth in that position for Liverpool.

Currently, Liverpool’s only senior central defenders are Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez, while Arne Slot has tested both Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch in that role.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Andy Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas utilized as center-backs in earlier cup matches next season.

Gomez is injured once more, and upon his return, he will likely struggle to instill confidence in his ability to stay fit.

It’s quite unfortunate how his injuries have hindered his season, reminiscent of how Daniel Sturridge was deprived of what should have been a remarkable career.

Acquiring Guehi or a similarly skilled center-back is essential this summer, especially since Liverpool has yet to find a replacement for Jarell Quansah following his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool was in a strong position to sign Marc Guehi last month, with circumstances favorable for a move to Anfield once the Isak deal is finalized.

According to the Mirror, Liverpool was in a prime position to secure Guehi last summer before the Reds shifted their focus and quickly intensified their interest in Alexander Isak, leading them to submit a £110m offer to Newcastle, which was turned down.

Guehi is said to “prefer a transfer to Liverpool,” and with the Isak deal moving forward as Newcastle encourages them to make a second offer for the Swedish player, attention is likely to shift back to Guehi.

After turning down £70m offers from Newcastle for their captain last summer – a choice that was justified by a historic FA Cup victory – Crystal Palace is now asking for £40m for Guehi.

Guehi is an excellent player – Gary Lineker described him as “intelligent during EUROs 2024” – and at 25, he is the same age as Isak.

This makes him an ideal target for an ambitious club like Liverpool that is seeking a star on the brink of reaching top-class status.
