Spanish Police confirm Diogo Jota was driving in fatal crash
Spanish authorities believe Liverpool star Diogo Jota was driving the Lamborghini Huracan that crashed and caught fire on the A-62 near Zamora, killing both him and his brother, Andre Silva.
Investigators say the vehicle was travelling at a speed “well above” the legal limit.
According to the Civil Guard, preliminary tests indicate Jota was behind the wheel, and a final expert report is being prepared for submission to a court in Puebla de Sanabria.
The crash happened while the brothers were en route to the UK, as Jota had been advised against flying after undergoing surgery. The car veered off the road and burst into flames, initially thought to be due to a tyre blowout.
However, Javier Lopez Delgado, president of the Spanish Association of Road Safety Auditors (ASEVI), has highlighted the poor condition of the road as a contributing factor. He mentioned the road had several faults and had recently been the site of another serious accident.
Delgado acknowledged that speed likely played a role but wasn’t the only factor, suggesting the outcome may have been different had they been travelling at a safer speed, such as 55mph.
The investigation remains ongoing.
