Liverpool, England – On March 3, 2025, tech mogul Elon Musk made waves in the football world by confirming that he has finalized a deal to purchase Liverpool FC, one of the Premier League’s most prestigious clubs, for an eye-watering £6 billion. The announcement, delivered during a press conference in London, followed months of rumors sparked by Musk’s father, Errol Musk, who had previously alluded to the Tesla CEO’s interest in acquiring the club earlier this year. In addition to the acquisition details, Musk shared his vision for a “dream team” lineup, revealing ambitious plans to elevate Liverpool to global football dominance.

Musk, currently the world’s wealthiest person with a net worth of $425.2 billion according to Forbes, has been associated with Liverpool since January 2025 when Errol Musk mentioned on Times Radio, “Oh yes, [Elon has expressed a desire to buy Liverpool], but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it.” However, Musk’s most recent statement leaves little room for doubt, confirming the deal with current owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who have been in charge of the club since 2010. Despite FSG’s previous denials, including a spokesperson’s claim in January that there was “no truth to these rumors,” Musk’s persistence and financial strength seem to have persuaded the American owners.

During the press conference, Musk expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition and his deep personal connection to Liverpool. “I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve finalized the purchase of Liverpool FC for £6 billion,” Musk said. “This club has a rich history and an incredible fanbase, and I’m honored to take it into the future. My grandmother was born in Mossley Hill, and I’ve always felt a bond with this city. Now, it’s time to build a team that will dominate football for decades. We’ve got the dream lineup ready, and I can’t wait to see it come to life.”

The £6 billion figure matches a January report from Weekend Sport, which initially mentioned Musk’s interest in the club at that price, surpassing Forbes’ May 2024 valuation of £4.3 billion. While some speculated that FSG might have asked for a premium because of Liverpool’s current dominance in both the Premier League and Champions League standings, Musk’s willingness to pay reflects his determination to make a bold statement in the football world. On the other hand, some critics question whether Musk’s controversial reputation, including his political ties to Donald Trump and support for far-right groups like Germany’s AfD, could alienate Liverpool’s fanbase, who are known for their commitment to social justice and community values.

Musk also revealed his envisioned “dream team” lineup for Liverpool, which combines current stars with potential blockbuster signings. Based on information from a speculative lineup by Liverpool.com and Musk’s own comments, the proposed XI in a 4-2-3-1 formation (right to left) includes:

– Goalkeeper (GK): Alisson – Musk praised the Brazilian as “the world’s best goalkeeper,” securing his place in the lineup.

– Right-Back (RB): Jeremie Frimpong – A potential new acquisition from Bayer Leverkusen, noted for his attacking ability.

– Center-Back (CB): Ibrahima Konaté – Retained for his rising reputation as one of the Premier League’s top defenders.

– Center-Back (CB): Virgil van Dijk – Musk described him as “the best defender in the world,” affirming his spot as captain.

– Left-Back (LB): Milos Kerkez – A promising young Hungarian from Bournemouth, targeted as a future replacement for Andy Robertson.

– Central Midfield (CDM): Ryan Gravenberch – A current Liverpool star who has flourished under manager Arne Slot.

– Central Midfield (CDM): Alexis Mac Allister – Retained for his vision and defensive contributions in midfield.

– Right Wing (RW): Mohamed Salah – Musk praised Salah as “the best right winger in football,” despite ongoing contract negotiations.

– Central Attacking Midfield (CAM): Dominik Szoboszlai – Held for his creativity and dynamism.

– Left Wing (LW): Cody Gakpo – A versatile forward whom Musk believes can excel on the wing.

– Striker (ST): Viktor Gyokeres – A rumored target from Sporting CP, with Musk reportedly ready to meet the player’s high asking price to lead the line.

Musk’s vision has generated excitement as well as skepticism among fans. While some see the potential for a new era of success, others are concerned about the cultural fit, given Musk’s past remarks and his confessed support for Manchester United, Liverpool’s bitter rivals, as revealed in a 2022 tweet: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” Musk later clarified it as a joke, but his childhood allegiance to the Red Devils has raised concerns among the Anfield faithful. Additionally, Musk will need to pass the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test, which could be complicated by his controversial public stances. Nevertheless, his immense financial resources—his net worth is nearly 80 times that of Liverpool’s valuation—mean that few doubt his ability to push the deal through if he remains committed. As of now, the football world is buzzing with Musk’s bold move, leaving Liverpool fans to speculate on what the future holds for their beloved club.
