Manchester United receives major hint regarding club takeover following recent INEOS update.
Manchester United is progressing with plans for a significant transformation at Old Trafford.
INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe has faced backlash for introducing cost-cutting measures after acquiring a minority stake in December 2023. These cuts are ongoing, with reports indicating that the 13-time Premier League champions are expected to lay off an additional 150-200 employees before the season concludes.
The club has already downsized its workforce, limited company credit card usage, tightened remote work policies, and is now contemplating closing the staff canteen, which could save up to £1 million annually. This seems to indicate INEOS’s attempt to address financial mismanagement under the Glazers, who are the only Premier League owners to have taken dividends from their club, totaling an estimated £160 million since their acquisition in 2005.
These continual cost-cutting actions strongly imply that Ratcliffe and INEOS aim to secure complete control of the club in the future. Many believe an informal agreement has already been made to enable a full takeover in the future—otherwise, why would such severe financial restructuring continue?
In a recent meeting, CEO Omar Berrada informed employees about the latest cuts, but according to sources, many attendees were skeptical, especially since they were asked not to share the information. There was also growing frustration that job losses among lower-level staff were being used to make up for higher-level failures.
On the field, United’s challenges have been apparent. Their best chance for silverware now lies in the Europa League after a disappointing domestic campaign. The departure of Erik ten Hag and Dan Ashworth also cost the club £14.5 million, with Ten Hag being dismissed just months after his contract extension and Ashworth leaving shortly after his arrival from Newcastle.
Recruitment continues to be a major concern, with high-profile signings like Antony, Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, and Joshua Zirkzee failing to meet expectations. Zirkzee, in particular, has had difficulty since his summer move, adding to the club’s growing list of underwhelming transfers.
Amidst financial challenges, employees were reportedly informed that cost-cutting is essential to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Meanwhile, the Glazer family remains in Florida, seemingly unaffected by the club’s struggles, despite years of mismanagement. For many fans, it feels like things will continue to decline before they improve for Manchester United.
