Gary Neville thinks Manchester United made an error by selling a player who is now dominating defenses, arguing that the club parted ways with him too soon.
Manchester United has made a number of questionable transfer decisions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. Players who left Old Trafford, such as Angel Gomes, have found success elsewhere, with Gomes thriving in France. Recently, Antony’s loan spell at Real Betis in Spain has impressed, particularly his standout performance against Gent.
There are many players who have excelled after leaving United, and Ruben Amorim has offered insights into why this tends to happen. However, there’s one player who could have strengthened a weak position at United. A decision made in 2014 now appears to be one that the club likely regrets.
Gary Neville feels Manchester United made a mistake in letting Danny Welbeck go, especially after his two-assist performance in Brighton’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea. Neville stated on Sky Sports that Welbeck was sold too soon under Louis van Gaal’s management because he didn’t fit the exact style of play at that time.
Neville pointed out that Welbeck’s style of play would have suited United’s game well, with his ability to exploit space and assist attacking players. He strongly disagrees with the belief that Welbeck wasn’t good enough for Manchester United, stating that he could easily have been a part of a top team and continue to perform at the highest level. Welbeck has been outstanding, even breaking down defenders like Colwill and Chalobah.
Welbeck was sold in 2014 for £16m, which cleared the way for Radamel Falcao’s loan move, reflecting the club’s recent transfer policy. Since leaving, the United academy product has been impressive, scoring six goals and providing one assist in 17 matches against his former club.
There were rumors of Welbeck returning to Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag, and Neville believes he would have been a valuable squad player for United over the years. It’s truly unfortunate that Welbeck was sold to make room for Falcao’s loan.
