Manchester United’s Goalkeeping Dilemma: Altay Bayindir’s Future Uncertain Amid Onana’s Issues

Manchester United’s ongoing issues in the goalkeeping department were once again evident during Sunday’s disappointing performance, with André Onana enduring yet another subpar display. The Cameroonian keeper came under scrutiny after making a mistake that led to Crystal Palace’s opening goal, adding to a growing list of costly blunders since his arrival at Old Trafford. Despite being brought in as the long-term replacement for David de Gea, Onana’s inconsistent performances have raised serious doubts about his dependability in United’s goal.

Despite Onana’s difficulties, United’s backup goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, has had very few opportunities in the first team. Since arriving from Fenerbahçe, the Turkish international has largely remained on the sidelines throughout the season. While he recently made his Europa League debut against Rangers, he has yet to feature in a single Premier League match. With Onana’s shaky form, many supporters have questioned why Bayindir hasn’t been given more chances.

Under former manager Erik ten Hag, Bayindir struggled to make an impact, with the Dutch manager continuing to back Onana despite his obvious mistakes. However, since the appointment of Ruben Amorim, there has been a shift in strategy. Amorim has been more open to incorporating the 26-year-old into his plans, providing him with more opportunities in cup competitions. So far, Bayindir has made four starts, including a standout performance in the FA Cup against Arsenal, where he made crucial penalty saves to help United progress.

Despite these limited opportunities, Bayindir is reportedly becoming frustrated with his limited role at Old Trafford. According to Turkish outlet Star, the goalkeeper is eager to leave Manchester United and return to Turkey, where he hopes to secure regular playing time. His main goal is to secure his position as the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper, a dream that seems increasingly out of reach while being a backup in the Premier League.

One club that has emerged as a potential destination for Bayindir is Galatasaray. The Turkish giants are preparing for the potential departure of their veteran goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera, at the end of the season. With Muslera’s future uncertain, Galatasaray has reportedly identified Bayindir as an ideal replacement. Sources close to the club suggest that discussions have already begun, with Bayindir’s representatives in talks with several Süper Lig teams, though Galatasaray is the current favorite.

“After Muslera hinted at a possible departure next season, Galatasaray has begun searching for a new goalkeeper. They have already begun efforts to secure the services of the national team’s goalkeeper,” Star reported.

While Bayindir’s future at United remains unclear, his future may ultimately depend on Amorim’s long-term plans for the goalkeeping position. The Portuguese manager may decide to stick with Onana despite his troubles or offer Bayindir a more prominent role in the future. However, United has also been linked with a potential summer move for Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, a highly regarded goalkeeper who could challenge for the starting spot immediately. Additionally, Amorim is reportedly impressed with academy prospect Elyh Harrison, further complicating Bayindir’s chances at Old Trafford.

If United were to sign another goalkeeper, Bayindir’s chances of breaking into the first team would be further diminished. Many believe that he is too talented to remain as a backup, and with his contract running until 2027, United could demand a significant transfer fee for his services. The Turkish goalkeeper is currently valued at around €10 million, but with growing interest, the Red Devils could receive multiple offers that could raise his price.

For now, Bayindir’s situation remains unresolved. He will have to wait and see whether Amorim will give him more opportunities or if United will bring in further competition for the starting role. With Galatasaray and other Turkish clubs keeping a close watch, the next few months could be pivotal in determining whether Bayindir’s time in England comes to an end.
