it Could Be Their Downfall”—Former Chelsea player warns Maresca on concern about current team

Chelsea’s strong start to the Premier League season has positioned them as serious contenders under the guidance of Enzo Maresca. Currently sitting second in the table, just two points behind league leaders Liverpool and four ahead of Arsenal, the Blues have shown promise and consistency. However, former Chelsea and England defender Glen Johnson has raised concerns that could jeopardize their title ambitions.

Johnson has pointed out that Chelsea’s defense remains a significant vulnerability despite their overall impressive performances. Following their 2-1 victory against Brentford on Sunday, thanks to goals from Marc Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea have kept the pressure on Liverpool. Yet, Johnson’s comments underline a lingering issue that may require urgent attention.

“Chelsea’s defense could be their downfall in the title race,” Johnson remarked. “The Tottenham game was great to watch, but it wasn’t as if Chelsea dominated it; they just made fewer mistakes than Tottenham. Against the top, top sides, you’re not going to score four goals after being 2-0 down. The top teams would shut it down, and that’s what will stop you winning the league.”

His observations have resonated with a section of the Chelsea fanbase, many of whom have voiced similar concerns about the team’s defensive fragility. While the team has demonstrated resilience and the ability to fight back in challenging matches, their backline has shown moments of vulnerability that could prove costly against stronger opponents.

To solidify their title challenge, Chelsea might need to consider signing an experienced center-back and potentially a new first-choice goalkeeper. While their current squad boasts talent and potential, it lacks the defensive reliability that championship-winning teams typically exhibit.

Under Maresca, Chelsea’s progress has been evident, and their title aspirations appear well-founded. However, the grueling nature of the Premier League demands consistency and strength across all areas of the pitch. Addressing their defensive weaknesses could be the key to sustaining their momentum and keeping pace with the league’s top contenders.
