In the aftermath of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Fulham in the Premier League, former Premier League referee Mike Dean has publicly apologized to Liverpool fans over a controversial decision during the match. The incident centered around a dangerous foul committed by Fulham’s Andreas Pereira on Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, which many felt should have resulted in a red card.

The match was marred by a series of decisions, including a red card for Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson in the 17th minute, which left the team with 10 men for the remainder of the game. However, the pivotal moment came when Pereira fouled Gravenberch by striking his Achilles from behind in what appeared to be a reckless challenge.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, Mike Dean was unequivocal in his criticism of the decision made by referee Tony Harrington: “Pereira struck Gravenberch’s Achilles with a clear follow-through and completely missed the ball. He knew exactly what he was doing. This was definitely a red card offense.”

The situation was compounded when, moments after the foul, Pereira went on to score Fulham’s opening goal, adding to the frustration of Liverpool fans. To make matters worse, Robertson was later sent off, leaving Liverpool with no natural left-back due to Kostas Tsimikas’ ongoing injury.

While Gravenberch thankfully escaped serious injury, the fact that Pereira remained on the field and even contributed to a goal has left many fans and pundits fuming. Despite the adversity, Liverpool, now down to 10 men, was unable to turn the game around and secure a win, finishing with a draw that left them top of the Premier League standings with 36 points after 15 matches.
