The Premier League clarifies two disputed penalty calls involving Liverpool as the referee is substituted.

The Premier League has issued statements regarding the penalty disputes in the match between Liverpool and Brentford.

In the dying moments of the second half, Cody Gakpo fell to the ground, but Liverpool was refused a penalty, allowing Brentford to extend their lead shortly after.

The Premier League has provided an explanation for the lack of a penalty awarded to Liverpool when Cody Gakpo went down in the box during their match against Brentford.

Gakpo fell in the latter part of the first half, but replays indicated little to no contact with the Liverpool player, prompting the Premier League to clarify the referee’s ruling.

A message from the Premier League Match Center on X stated: “The referee’s decision to not award a penalty to Liverpool was reviewed and upheld by VAR, concluding that Collins did not foul Gakpo.”

Following the incident with Gakpo, Kevin Schade scored, increasing Brentford’s lead by capitalizing on a through ball, sprinting past Ibrahima Konate, and placing the ball into the net beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Milos Kerkez managed to score a goal deep into injury time of the first half, and it was later confirmed at halftime that referee Simon Hooper had suffered an injury, leading to Tim Robinson taking over for the second half.

The controversy continued after halftime, as Brentford was awarded a penalty in the second half due to a challenge by Virgil van Dijk on Dango Outtara.

Replacement referee Robinson initially signaled for a free-kick, but the video assistant referee stepped in to clarify that the foul occurred on the edge of the penalty area.

Igor Tiago then took the penalty, successfully restoring Brentford’s two-goal lead.
