Liverpool sent January message over Marc Guehi transfer amid Virgil van Dijk fears

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has urged his old club to go “all out” to sign Marc Guehi in the January transfer window, insisting the Crystal Palace defender is the ideal solution to ease the burden on Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool reportedly agreed a £35 million deal for Guehi on transfer deadline day last month, but the move collapsed when Palace failed to secure a replacement in time. Since then, Guehi has delivered a string of strong performances for the Eagles, including a standout display in their 2–1 win over Liverpool at Selhurst Park two weeks ago.

The Reds currently face a defensive shortage, with only three senior centre-backs available after Giovanni Leoni was ruled out for the season following ACL surgery.

While Liverpool had planned to revisit the move next summer — when Guehi’s contract with Palace expires — interest from Real Madrid and several other top European clubs has complicated matters. Murphy believes Liverpool cannot afford to wait.

“We’ve got around 11 weeks until the window opens,” Murphy said. “The question is whether they go for a short-term fix or just pay what’s needed for Guehi. I’d move for him in January — he’s perfect in so many ways.

“He knows the league, doesn’t need time to adapt, and has all the attributes: calm, quick, composed, and technically strong. He’s exactly what Liverpool need. I’d go all out for him.”

Murphy also suggested that Liverpool already have an established relationship with Guehi’s representatives, which could work in their favour if they decide to pursue the deal when the transfer window reopens.
