Van Dijk and Alisson must warn Liverpool’s £34m talent to stop being lazy, claims Wayne Rooney

Reports suggest that Wayne Rooney has urged Liverpool’s leadership duo, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, to address the work ethic of a key Liverpool player, identifying a particular area of concern following recent performances.

Specifically, Rooney has criticized Mohamed Salah’s defensive effort, particularly during Liverpool’s recent 2-1 defeat to Chelsea. According to Rooney, Salah’s lack of tracking back to help his full-back, Conor Bradley, who was reportedly struggling during the match, is a worry.

Rooney’s comments came after Liverpool’s second consecutive Premier League defeat, highlighting a potential dip in Salah’s form this season, including a four-game goalless streak. He believes that while a team might tolerate a player’s reduced defensive workload during periods of success, recent losses have exposed this issue.

It is important to note that Rooney has also previously criticized the work ethic of other Liverpool players, including Virgil van Dijk, whom he labeled as “lazy” after a Champions League defeat to PSG in March 2025. Van Dijk, in response, dismissed these claims and emphasized the team’s focus on their goals and performance.
