Manchester United have received a huge boost in their bid to potentially secure Oliver Glasner as Ruben Amorim’s replacement.

Amorim on borrowed time

Amorim is under immense pressure at United amidst the club’s extremely poor start to the 2025/26 season.

United currently sit in 14th place in the Premier League standings, having won two, drawn one and lost three of their opening six games. The Red Devils have managed a measly seven points in that period.

Last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Brentford reignited doubts over Amorim’s long-term fit, with many fans seemingly calling for a change in the dugout. While United remain steadfast in their support for Amorim, a lack of improvement on the pitch will inevitably challenge that confidence.

There are whispers that United have begun identifying possible successors, with names like Gareth Southgate, Andoni Iraola, Michael Carrick (interim), and Glasner emerging.

Last month, Glasner admitted he was keeping a close eye on the situation at United.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the Austrian coach is open to staying at Palace, provided the London outfit matches his ambitions. The report further noted that Palace, aware of United’s interest in their boss, are working on handing him a new deal.

However, according to the BBC, Palace’s offer for Glasner has been on the table since the summer, yet he has shown no indication of accepting it. The outlet notes he is likely to leave when the season concludes – a factor that could work massively in United’s favour.

BBC reveals, “Sources have told BBC Sport that Glasner was offered a new contract earlier this summer, but has yet to put pen to paper on an extension.”

“Well-placed insiders claim the Austrian preferred to wait until the end of the transfer window before making a decision – a choice motivated by his inclination to see how committed the club were to strengthening the squad.”

His outspoken remarks on Palace’s summer business suggest Glasner believes the club didn’t meet his expectations.

BBC add, “Sources close to Palace claim the chances of Glasner staying are remote, that the perceived transfer inactivity over the summer was taken as a sign that he and the club are not aligned in terms of their ambitions.”

Nevertheless, it’s understood that Palace will continue trying to persuade the 51-year-old to stay.

In addition to United, Bayern Munich are also admirers of Glasner but unlike Amorim, Vincent Kompany is not under the spotlight
