David De Gea Tipped For Shock Man Utd Return

David De Gea would “consider” a move to Manchester United, according to a former Spain international, after the goalkeeper was linked with a surprise return to Old Trafford.

To the disappointment of many fans, David De Gea left Manchester United in the summer of 2023 after the club opted not to extend his contract.

The veteran goalkeeper, who featured 545 times for United between 2011 and 2023, spent a year as a free agent before joining Fiorentina in Serie A in August 2024.

“I had several offers, but I really wanted to experience Italian football,” De Gea said. “Talks with Fiorentina were straightforward, and they were clearly the best fit. It was encouraging to see how many people wanted me back on the pitch.”

After 446 days without a competitive match, he finally made his debut for the Italian side in a Europa Conference League clash against Hungary’s Puskas Akademia.

De Gea’s replacement at United, André Onana, took over in July 2023 but later lost his place following a run of costly mistakes and was loaned out to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

United have since added Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens to their squad, though reports suggested they had quietly explored the possibility of bringing De Gea back. According to The Sun, the Spaniard made “a good impression” during a pre-season friendly return to Old Trafford.

Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta has also backed the idea of De Gea rejoining United.

“I would have definitely preferred him to stay,” Mendieta told OLBG. “I’m sure he felt the same way too. That year off wouldn’t have been necessary.

“He went to Italy and proved himself, becoming the best goalkeeper in Serie A, which shows the quality he still has. He remains among the top goalkeepers, not just in Italy but even on the international stage.

“Would he go back to United? I think he would consider it. He was very happy there, he loved being part of a club like United. But at the same time, he’s also settled where he is now.”

Here’sMendieta went on to say: “I think United acted too quickly in moving De Gea on. Even if they felt change was needed, they should have ensured they had a proper replacement.”

De Gea’s message to United after his exit

Following the pre-season friendly between Manchester United and Fiorentina this summer, De Gea shared his emotions about returning to Old Trafford.

“It was a magical moment for me and my family to be back at Old Trafford — my home,” he wrote on social media. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the incredible reception and all the love you gave me.”

He also added a message for the fans: “To the supporters who always stood by me during my years at the club, our paths may cross again. We’ve experienced everything together.”
