Harvey Elliott expresses his feelings in an emotional statement, saying, “It was extremely challenging” regarding his departure from Liverpool.

Harvey Elliott has opened up about the need to be “selfish” in his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old sealed a loan move to Aston Villa on deadline day, with the deal set to become permanent for £35 million after 10 appearances under Unai Emery (The Athletic).

In an emotional farewell message two weeks ago, the England U21 international admitted he felt compelled to depart Anfield in search of regular football, having struggled for minutes under Arne Slot.

Reflecting on his choice (via Liverpool Echo), Elliott said:

“It was very difficult — first making the decision to leave, then finding the right club. I had to make some tough choices. I spoke with the team in detail, but ultimately I knew this was the right move.”

Elliott stressed his affection for Liverpool but explained why game time was the priority:

“I loved every moment; I wouldn’t change anything. I learned a lot and had amazing experiences, but the most important thing for me now is playing. Whether starting or coming off the bench, I need to know I’ll be involved on matchday to keep developing.”

He reassured supporters that his bond with the Reds will remain strong:

“My love for Liverpool will always stay. I’ll follow them from afar and wish them all the best, but sometimes in football you have to put yourself first. I made this choice for my own career, while taking everything I learned at Liverpool with me. Now it’s about progressing.”

After limited involvement at Liverpool — just seven minutes across their first four games — Elliott has already had more action at Villa, featuring for 19 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Everton (Transfermarkt).
