According to sources cited by Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Onana’s push for revised terms stems from dissatisfaction with a standard 25 percent pay cut triggered by United’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League last season.
The automatic wage reduction clause, a common feature in United’s contracts, has evidently frustrated the 29-year-old, prompting him to seek improved terms.
Sources suggest Ruben Amorim views the goalkeeper’s contract demands as a potential distraction during a critical rebuilding phase.
Manchester United’s leadership, now under the influence of INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority ownership, has prioritized financial discipline and squad restructuring.
The club’s hierarchy may be reluctant to renegotiate Onana’s contract so soon with a departure imminent following the arrival of Senne Lammens.
