Man Utd fans can’t believe what Grimsby posted minutes after Carabao Cup exit

Grimsby Town produced one of the most viral football-related social media posts of 2025 after they recorded a historic penalty shoot-out win against Manchester United.
David Artell’s side secured their spot in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night with an almighty giant-killing.
With just 30 minutes played at Blundell Park, the League Two outfit raced into a surprise 2-0 lead through goals from Charles Vernam and former United academy player Tyrell Warren.
The visitors mounted a second-half comeback to force penalties, but Amorim’s men were beaten 12-11 on penalties in what will go down as one of the most humiliating results in their recent history.
Shortly after the full-time whistle, Grimsby rubbed salt into the wounds with a post that has since received more than 150,000 likes on X, formerly Twitter.

As seen below, the club’s social media admin got involved in a meme that has been doing the rounds of late. Alongside a picture of a fish, they wrote: “You’ve just been slapped by the fish.”
Here’s how fans on social media reacted to the post.
One said: “They’re bantering us off the face of the earth,” while another wrote: “My head would be on Mars if we’d just been knocked out by Grimsby Town and they posted this hahah.”
A third commented: “Grimsby Town of League Two and not so long ago of the National League tweeting this after beating Manchester United. Football has never ever been so back.”
A fourth said: “Grimsby admin is absolutely off the rails,” and a fifth added: “YOU JUST GOT SLAPPED BY THE FISH.”
Ruben Amorim delivers no-nonsense interview after Grimsby defeat
A frustrated Ruben Amorim admitted “something has to change” after they suffered at the hands of Grimsby.
Speaking to ITV Sport in his post-match interview, he said: “It’s not about the result. I was not thinking about the penalties. I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today. I just want to apologise to our fans.
“Everything (was missing). We have to be proud to go to the pitch. We played quite well in the Premier League, and then we come to a fourth division team and play like that.”
“I am shocked,” he added. “We are in a moment when we made a lot of changes, we try to fight a lot of things, but in these moments we have to show up.
“When you don’t show up, you feel that something has to change, but we’re not going to change 22 players.”
