Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, expressed his deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences on the passing of Diego Jota, Liverpool and Portugal star, who died suddenly in the early hours of Thursday morning in a tragic car accident that claimed his life and that of his brother.
In an official statement, Infantino conveyed his profound shock over the loss of such a young player in the prime of his football career, noting that Jota, only 28 years old, had achieved a remarkable professional journey and had a promising future in football. He also praised the performance of Jota’s brother, André Silva, who shines at the club Banfield, emphasizing that their loss is a heavy blow to everyone who knew them and to the global football community.
The FIFA president added that this great tragedy has caused immense pain in everyone’s hearts, and he offered his sincerest condolences and sympathy to the families of Jota and Silva, their friends, as well as to Liverpool, Banfield, and the Portuguese Football Federation, expressing his full support during this difficult ordeal.
In a heartfelt message on his official Instagram account, Jürgen Klopp, former Liverpool manager, bid farewell to his friend and teammate, saying: “It is hard to accept this reality. There may be a higher wisdom I cannot see now, but my heart is heavy with sorrow over losing Diego and his brother André.”
Klopp continued that Jota was not only a brilliant player but also a loving person, a loyal friend, and a devoted husband and father who cherished his family. He explained that he will deeply miss him and sends all his feelings and prayers to his family and loved ones, wishing them strength and solace in these tough times.
Diego Jota and his brother died in a tragic car accident after one of the tires of their Lamborghini exploded, causing the vehicle to lose control, veer off the road, and catch fire. They both lost their lives instantly at the scene, leaving everyone in shock.

Infantino , who is in the United States for the Club World Cup , continued with his message to Diogo Jota’s family .
” They will be deeply missed by all who knew them and by the entire football community. On behalf of FIFA and the entire football family, I offer my sincere condolences to their families and friends, and to everyone at Liverpool , Penafiel and the Portuguese Football Federation . May they rest in peace ,” the FIFA President continued.
