Manchester United to Shift Focus from Delap and Target Prolific Striker if Champions League Bid Falls Short

Manchester United are expected to ramp up efforts to sign a top-tier striker—possibly abandoning interest in Liam Delap—if they miss out on Champions League qualification next season, recent reports suggest. Strengthening the forward line is a top priority this summer for both the club and incoming manager Ruben Amorim, who is already evaluating potential signings.
One driving factor is the disappointing form of Rasmus Højlund throughout the 2024–25 season. Despite arriving at Old Trafford amid high expectations, Højlund has failed to make a significant impact in his second year. His inconsistency and struggles in key matches have prompted United to consider selling him. Interest from Serie A clubs remains strong, and a move back to Italy is reportedly on the table as the club looks to revamp its attacking options.
Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee has shown promise but is considered more effective in a supporting role rather than as the primary striker. Though he brings creativity and versatility, he lacks the clinical edge and physical presence required to lead the line in the Premier League.
Young striker Chido Obi is also part of the squad but is seen as a long-term prospect rather than an immediate solution due to his lack of experience at the top level.
Given these limitations, United are actively seeking a high-quality striker with a proven record who can handle pressure and deliver results quickly. A new candidate has reportedly emerged on their shortlist, indicating the club’s readiness to pivot from Delap if he doesn’t meet the required standards. Their summer recruitment strategy will likely depend heavily on whether they secure a Champions League, which will influence both their budget and the appeal of their project to top players
